Notes From The Dead Zone // DaY002
Day Two of The Dead Zone hit the ground running with the Red Flag Replay. A survey link was posted on DEJADEAD.com which allowed viewers to participate in Flag Libs - the interactive component to this 3 hour live stream event. The surveys allowed people to fill in the blanks to the lyrics of RED FLAG off of DEJA DEAD's debut album.
Max Miller (currently the only permanent member of DEJA DEAD) performed RED FLAG over and over again for the duration of the stream, refreshing the survey results every time the song restarted, and interjecting viewers' lyrics into his own. The results were a mixed bag of cleverness, crudeness, and outright randomness. Star Wars and Harry Potter themed verses were among the favorites, while other people used the opportunity to try and make Max sing the most inappropriate things they could come up with. Visitors to The Dead Zone's physical location were encouraged to jump around on screen with Max, and the few brave souls who joined him added to the craziness of what was occurring. The archived stream can be viewed in full here, with a highlights reel to follow in the coming weeks.
As the day progressed, a few people popped in and out of the shop, sitting in the back to listen to the record or just perusing the art. Raffle tickets from The Space Capsule were flying off the shelves as hopefuls tried their luck for a chance at winning the Grand Prize - an ultra rare Jim Jarmusch and Jozef van Wissem test pressing of their album Concerning the Entrance Into Eternity, which had been donated to the raffle by Limited To One.
Finally evening rolled around and it was time for the debut performance of the DEJA DEAD MUSICAL COLLECTIVE. As guests crammed into the back room, they were plunged into darkness and flashing lights, with only glowsticks and beats to guide their way. Charles Mansfield accompanied Max on the guitar throughout the performance, before breaking into his hit Large Dog near the end of the set. Horra also joined in to perform their collaboration with DEJA DEAD, a cover of Madonna's "Candy Perfume Girl". T0ska performed her single "Home", which DEJA DEAD has a guest verse on. The DEJA DEAD album was performed in its entirety, as well as an exclusive early preview of a brand new song.
As the cheers rang out through the catacombs of The Dead Zone as DEJA DEAD took their final bows, the energy in the room was palpable. Nobody seemed ready to leave just yet, so the party just kept on going. Near the end of the night, the final raffle winners were announced and then, as if it were all just a shared fever dream, The Dead Zone vanished into the night.
Who knows where it will pop up next? Only time will tell.
Thank you again to everyone who helped make this event such a massive success.
